ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to roll out 700,000 Google Chromebooks to students across the country under a major digital education initiative, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan announced on Friday.

Speaking at an event, Mashhood said the initiative aims to expand access to digital learning and equip students with modern tools needed to meet both national and global challenges. He emphasized that Pakistan’s youth are its greatest asset and that investing in technology-driven education is essential to unlocking their full potential.

The Chromebooks will be distributed to students enrolled in schools, colleges, and universities nationwide. Mashhood said the programme would significantly strengthen the country’s digital learning ecosystem by providing access to reliable online platforms, updated educational resources, and modern software that supports research, innovation, and creative learning.

He noted that the distribution will take place in carefully planned phases to ensure transparency and fair allocation based on institutional needs and readiness. A national monitoring mechanism will also be put in place to track usage, assess outcomes, and ensure effective utilisation of the devices in both classroom and remote-learning environments.

The chairman highlighted growing confidence among overseas Pakistanis, saying increased investment from the diaspora is supporting economic growth, job creation, and skills development in emerging sectors.

Mashhood added that the initiative will play a critical role in bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas. He confirmed that students from Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan will be fully included, underscoring the government’s commitment to equal educational opportunities across all regions.

He concluded that the Chromebook Programme reflects a long-term vision to strengthen Pakistan’s education system, empower youth with globally relevant digital skills, and move the country toward a more inclusive, technology-driven future.
